American Red Cross Month: Presidential Proclamation for Red Cross Month issued each year for march since 1943. Ash Wednesday (1st): Marks the beginning of Lent. Forty weekdays and six Sundays (Saturday considered a weekday) remain until Easter Sunday. Named for use of ashes in ceremonial penance. Honor Society Awareness Month: Promote the students of honor societys and recognize superior scholarship, promote intelligent learning and living and promote equal opportunities for all people. Support the staff, faculty and advisers of honor societies and professional fraternities through the exchange of meaningful ideas, celebration of diversity, understanding and service. Humorists Are Artists Month (HAAM): To recognize the important contributions made by various types of humorists to high art of living. International Ideas Month: Everybody has ideas! Many people need to be encouraged ormotivated or need to build skills in order to communicate and get their ideas out in the open for consideration and/or action. This month is dedicated to all ideas - large, small, great, not-so-great, past, current and ideas yet to come. Without constant new ideas, progress and people stagnate. www.springboardtraining.com International Listening Awareness Month: Dedicated to learning more about the impact that listening has on all human activity. To promote teh study, development and teaching of effective listening in all settings. www.listen.org International Mirth Month: The merry month of March is set aside to encourage more mirthful moments. Its focus is to show people how to use humor to deal with not-so-funny stuff. www.aath.org or www.allenklein.com Irish-American heritage Month: Presidential Proclamation called for by House Joint Resolution Lent (March 1 - April 15): Most Christian churches observe a period of fasting and penitence (40 weekdays and 6 Sundays - Saturday considered a weekday) beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on the Saturday before Easter. The word Lent comes from "lengthen," referring to the lengthening of the day that occurs in the spring. Mental Retardation Awareness Month: To educate the public about the needs of this nation'smore than seven million citizens with mental retardation and about ways to prevent retardation. The Arc is a national organization on mental retardation, formerly the Association for Retarded Citizens. www.thearc.org Music In Our Schools Month: To increase public awareness of the imprtance of music education as part of a balanced curriculum. www.menc.org National Athletic Training Month: This month Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) across the nation will be recognized for their dedication and commitment to providing quality health care for athletes at all levels ATCs are highly educated and can be found everywhere in sports - from high schools to professional ranks. National Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Month: To educate patients, their families, the public and th medical profession about the nature and impact of CFS, "The Thief of Vitality," and related disorderes, as well as to encourage and provide research funding. National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: To generate widespread awareness about colorectal cancer and to encourage people to learn more about how to prevent the diseas through a healthy lifestyle and regular screening.
